Gløgg

Gløgg is Danish mulled wine – spiced with cinnamon, cloves and cardamom and served with raisins and chopped almonds that you fish out of the glass with a spoon. It comes with æbleskiver, icing sugar and jam.

Ingredients

Spice infusion (the day before)

Gløgg

Method

  1. The day before, bring the water to the boil with the cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, ginger and orange zest, simmer for 5 minutes and leave to infuse overnight, covered. Soak the raisins in a little port or red wine if you like.
  2. Strain the spice infusion into a pan. Add the red wine and sugar and heat, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Let the gløgg heat up slowly but do not let it boil – otherwise the alcohol evaporates and the spices turn bitter.
  4. Add the raisins and chopped almonds, stir in port or rum if using, and serve the gløgg in glasses or cups with a teaspoon.

The story behind the dish

Gløgg is a hot drink of red wine with sugar and spices; in Denmark it is drunk above all during the Christmas season, often with æbleskiver.

In Denmark the drink used to be called "glødet vin" (glowing wine). The word gløgg was borrowed from the Swedish "glögg".

Enjoy it at Dansk Cottage

After a winter walk on the beach, the first thing we have is a mug of gløgg by the wood-burning stove – it warms your hands and makes the afternoon cosy.
