Why our house stands on screws instead of concrete

When a house is built on a natural plot, the question of what it stands on comes long before the first wall panel. At Dansk Cottage we decided against concrete and in favour of screw piles.

The decision

Dansk Cottage is being built as an ecological timber house. The foundation needs no concrete at all: instead of a classic concrete slab, the house stands on modern screw piles. This protects the natural ground while providing a stable, long-lasting base. For us this decision is one of the core ideas of the project, as described on our sustainability page.

What a screw-pile foundation is

With a screw-pile foundation, threaded steel piles are screwed into the ground by machine. Unlike a concrete foundation, no large areas of soil are dug out and no concrete is poured. In principle, the piles can also be unscrewed again.

For a house on a 3,300-square-metre natural plot this is an advantage: the ground, the meadow and the trees largely stay as they are.

The timeline

The plan: in autumn 2026 the screw piles will be installed while the modular house goes into production. In January 2027 the house will be assembled and handed over, followed by the furnishing and outdoor areas in February. The house opens in spring 2027.

More posts about planning, furnishing and building will follow here in the building diary – for example about the lighting at the cottage.
