Light for dark days: how we are planning the lighting at the cottage

A holiday home in the north lives from its light: in summer from plenty of it, in autumn and winter from the right kind. That is why lighting at Dansk Cottage is not an afterthought but part of the planning.

Why light is a topic of its own for us

On our about us page we write that we want to share the journey of Dansk Cottage here: from the plot and the build to choosing the kitchen, furniture, lighting and garden design. Lighting is not on that list by chance. It helps decide whether a house feels inviting in November or merely bright.

Daylight: large glass walls, lots of sky

The house has an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with large glass walls and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors to the wooden terrace, as we describe on the cottage page. Bringing daylight inside in the north of Denmark means needing less artificial light, while enjoying a view of the 3,300-square-metre natural plot. The sauna, too, gets a large panoramic window looking out onto the garden.

Evening light: Poul Henningsen, stove and candles

For the interior we are going with Scandinavian design, as described on our design page. One of the names that has a place there is Poul Henningsen, a Danish pioneer of lighting. Since the 1920s his PH lamps have stood for soft, glare-free light – exactly what we want for evenings in the house.

Danish cosiness also means candlelight and a fire. What hygge means here, and why it matters especially in the darker months, is explained on our wood-burning stove page. A wood-burning stove in the living area is a fixed part of Dansk Cottage.

The timeline

The plan: in February 2027 the furniture, kitchen, sauna and garden will be completed, and the first guests arrive in March 2027. The full timeline is in the building diary. Until the house is finished, all images are visualisations.
