Søby, Ærø

Holiday home in Søby – your home in the north of Ærø

Søby is small enough to do everything on foot, and big enough for a harbour, a café and the ferry to the mainland. This is where Dansk Cottage is taking shape, on Skovbygade.

Arriving in Søby

Søby is the northernmost village on Ærø: a small harbour with boats and fishing spots, views over the Danish South Sea and the berth of the ferry from Fynshav. Dansk Cottage is just a few minutes’ walk from the harbour, the supermarket and the village centre.

Harbour and ferry

The ferry from Søby to Fynshav on the island of Als is the fastest connection to the Danish mainland. This route is also served by the electric ferry Ellen – according to our sustainability page, the most powerful fully electric ferry in the world. A ferry from Faaborg also docks directly in Søby.

Nature on the doorstep

A few minutes from Søby lies the Vitsø nature area, with a lake, salt meadows and three protected bird islands. Skjoldnæs lighthouse on the island’s north-western tip is another lovely outing, and Ærø Golf Klub is in Søby too. More under golf.

Art next door

Directly opposite Dansk Cottage is Franziska Kurth’s tapestry weaving studio. Kunsthøjskole på Ærø, one of Denmark’s smallest folk high schools, is housed in a thatched farmhouse from 1779 – also just a few minutes away. More on our art & culture page.
